The Heron - Luxury glamping with a wild Welsh twist

The Heron is one of four identical, beautifully styled Isabella Time Out Tents, located on a much-loved glamping site near the picturesque market town of Rhayader. For those who love the idea of camping in rural Wales but still appreciate a few home comforts, this is the perfect retreat. Some might even call it luxury camping—offering everything needed for a truly memorable stay.

Sleeping up to five guests, with the option to accommodate two more on a double sofa bed for an additional charge, The Heron is ideal for families, friends, or couples seeking a unique countryside escape.

Inside, the state-of-the-art tent includes a fully equipped kitchenette with a small fridge freezer, electric oven, kettle, toaster, and all the essentials for cooking up anything from a hearty breakfast to a picnic lunch or evening meal. The open-plan layout makes the most of the space, with a large corner sofa and coffee table forming the heart of the living area—perfect for relaxing in front of the smart TV after a day exploring. The sofa also converts into a bed for extra guests.

At the rear of the tent are two bedrooms: a cosy elevated double bed and a triple bunk room, featuring a lower double and an upper single—ideal for children or friends sharing.

Step outside and the experience becomes even more special. The Heron boasts its own private hot tub with uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside, an outdoor seating area for alfresco dining, a fire pit for toasting marshmallows, and a star-gazing hammock where you can unwind in the sunshine while listening to the gentle sound of a nearby brook.

While the tent itself does not include an en-suite bathroom, guests have full access to the on-site toilet and shower block, just a short walk away.

If you’re in the mood to explore, you’re in a fantastic location. Watch red kites being fed locally, discover the breathtaking beauty of the Elan Valley, or take a leisurely walk through Gilfach Nature Reserve. There’s no shortage of opportunities for adventure, wildlife spotting, or simply soaking in the fresh Welsh air.

Please Note: These tents have an Electric Plinth Heater to take the chill but allows you to experience the real meaning of 'Glamping.'

Please be advised that there is a 10pm outdoor noise curfew. This is a family-friendly property, and all guests are expected to respect the quiet hours to ensure the comfort of everyone on site.

Hot Tub

A disappointing break! 2.2/5

We were really disappointed with our recent stay. We arrived to find the hot tub green, with visible scum around the edges. Having paid for early check-in, it was frustrating that we couldn’t use what we’d paid extra for. Overall, the standard seems to have declined since our last visit. There was no welcoming gift basket with Welsh cakes this time — just a few crisps and a single drink. The lights in the tent hang too low, and it’s easy to bump your head on them. Kitchen storage is very limited, which makes cooking and food preparation difficult, and the freezer door was broken. The sofa was uncomfortable, and we had to sit on the pillows for support. The sockets beside the sofa didn’t work either. We were provided with only one heater overnight, whereas last year there were three — as a result, we were cold during the night. It felt more like regular camping than “glamping.” We also found that the tent leaked when it rained, and anything placed too close to the sides became damp or wet. There were no lights leading to the toilets at night, which made it tricky to get around safely. Finally, firewood, which used to be included, is now being charged at £10. It’s a beautiful setting, but unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to expectations this time, and we wouldn’t choose to return.

Perfect retreat 5/5

Upon arriving, we were very impressed with the layout of the place and how clean everything looked. It was a breath of fresh air (literally). The tent was clean and tidy, with lots of space to move around. We loved the use of the fire and hob tub. We would definitely recommend this place.

Girls trip 4.8/5

We had a very enjoyable weekend. We had two glamping tents next to each other. We were comfortable and had a real good time. The only downfall was that we were a bit loud for other campers.

Lovely scenic getaway! 4.7/5

We booked this for my Sons birthday on arrival we opted for the birthday package which included birthday decorations & homemade cupcakes - delicious! Amazing location, quiet peaceful evenings stargazing from either the hot tub or the hammock. Would definitely return again!

Beautiful place 4.5/5

The location and site is amazing really beautiful withSheep roaming around too! I had arranged a birthday surprise for £20 we received a balloon banner and 4 cup cakes which was fine, also a lovely little welcome basket. Tent was as seen on photos. On our arrival we u zipped the door(from the top as didn't know any different) and it came off one side I tried to reattach but couldn't. I text the owner to advise. The response was "so you've pulled it off" no I hadn't pulled it off when I unzipped it it came off. Apparently you don't unzip from the top (maybe a sign to say that). We left for the day and returned to the owner who had duly fixed it. I was then accused of vending the zip (stainless steel) which I replied not intentionally but I did try and reattach the zip. The lady (claire) was very unwarming, sat with a certain look that made me feel very uncomfortable. The chap, after accusing me of vending a zip did try and de-ice the situation. From that moment on I was super paranoid . The freezer door for example was broken(not by me but felt I could get blamed), the men's shower room completely flooded ,this was reported to Claire but others and apparently not met with any acknowledgment or pleasantries. I would have definitely returned back to this place as it's so nice but for the owner. Yes I made a mistake with the zip but I would've expected a "don't worry these things happen make sure you zip from the bottom" I left the evening of the final night as it did turn very cold in the evening, I tied the rubbish up , separated the recycling as requested and left the money for the birthday stuff. I text Claire to say this, and didn't even get a have a safe trip.

Weekend away with Doggo, Hubby and Daughter 5/5

The tent was lovely, the heated plinth gave off more heat than we realised it would! Showers and toilets were clean. Kitchen area was functional and clean too. The hot tub was great and so was the fire pit. Do take camping chairs to sit around the fire pit of an evening though. Looking forward to booking and returning again for a lovely chilled out break! Also had the best fish, chips and curry sauce from the local chippy!

Relaxing Stay in a Beautiful Location – A Few Tweaks Would Make It Perfect! 4/5

We had a lovely stay at the glamping tent near Rhayader. The location was excellent — just a 20-minute drive to the beautiful Elan Valley, and Rhayader itself is a charming town with plenty to enjoy. The bedrooms were comfortable and very clean, and it was a nice touch to have fresh towels provided on the first day. The hot tub was a highlight — clean and well-maintained, with someone coming by daily to add chlorine and keep it in good condition. A few small suggestions that would improve the experience: for a booking of six people, there wasn’t quite enough cutlery — we only had four forks, which made mealtimes a bit tricky. Also, drying towels proved difficult, especially during wet weather. There’s no space inside to hang them, so providing either a clothes horse or offering fresh towel replacements mid-stay would be really helpful. While the tent can sleep six adults, we found it a bit of a squeeze and would recommend it as ideal for up to five adults for a more comfortable experience. For awareness when booking: the Kingfisher tent is closest to the toilet facilities, while Heron is the furthest away. The toilets themselves were fine — generally clean and well-stocked, though nothing exceptional. There are two mixed-gender toilets and one combined toilet/shower for males and one for females. It’s worth noting that the female shower had some drainage issues, as the tray isn’t level — water tended to pool away from the drain, which resulted in a bit of a foot bath by the end of the shower! Overall, we had a great time and would happily return — just a few tweaks would make it even better!

Lovely family stay 4/5

We arrived for a 2 day stay 4 adults and 3 children. It was not confined at all, we felt there was just enough room for this many people. We were left with a welcome box which was lovely. The tent is well stocked with everything you would need! The children. LOVED the stargazing hammock and hot tub but also the animals grazing around and the little stream behind us. A 10 min drive into Rhayader and a lovely pub lunch. We also used the pump track which was another great hit for the children. The toilets were warm and clean, although not enough toilet roll provided. A great family stay, would definitely go again.

A little gem! 4.8/5

Came across this site when looking for a last minute short stay with my family. We’ve done glamping pods before but never a tent. We were not disappointed. This place is a g of a find. The hammock and hot tub were family favourites. The living area and kitchen were well equipped and we slept comfortably and soundly. We loved our stay so much that we are going to book to stay again.

Holiday with pets 4.8/5

I really enjoy my stay but the shower and toilet facilities need to be check because the shower is blocked, one of the toilets light is not working.

Easter weekend 4.7/5

We stayed over the Easter Weekend in Heron, this was our second stay and we loved it as much as the first stay, the tent was clean and the little basket with crisps, drink, welsh cakes and marshmallows was a lovely little touch AND the kids loved the Easter egg in the fridge Our dog came with us and the dog bowls and treats for her were fab. My kids loved watching the lambs, afew times the lambs escaped from the field so they guided them back in which they loved. The hot tub was cleaned daily, and there was everything we needed in the kitchen to cook we made a Sunday roast which was great. The shower block and toilets were clean at all times! We did a trip to Elan Valley which we all loved. We had a great weekend and would highly recommend ??

Lianne O'Driscoll | 09 April 2024

Well needed escape. 4/5

we had a lovely stay here, our trip was cut short due to a bought of flu hitting me. The only thing that let it down was the distance to the toilets in the middle of the night in pouring rain.

Julie jones | 14 February 2024

Loved the Heron!! 4.7/5

An extremely comfortable and cosy 2 nights stay at the Heron. Although we woke up to a stunning frost in the morning, the tent remained very snug and warm throughout the night. Couldn’t have asked for a nicer short break away; the location, the comfort, the cleanliness, the value for money and not forgetting of course the hot tub and beautiful star gazing hammock! We will certainly be back! Our only criticism was the lack of light guiding the way to the toilet block and outside lighting on the decking area near the hot tub and fire pit.

Jo Barrell | 06 January 2024

The perfect getaway 5/5

I booked the Heron as the kids and hubby wanted to go camping and there is no way I was sleeping on a damp floor, came across the Heron and it ticked everything… the beds were really comfy, we stayed when it was really wet rained the whole time but we didn’t feel cold or wet once we were cosy in the hot tub and the tent. Even had a message one night to make sure we were warm enough which we were excellent service. I personally was really worried about having to use a toilet block and a very short 20 steps away & so clean. If u like the sound of water to help u get to sleep the heron is for your as the little stream behind is really calming and peaceful. We 100% will be back me hubby and the kids absolutely loved it just want we needed to recharge and spend some quality time together.

Kelly Louise Lea | 06 November 2023

We had a relaxing stay in lovely rural location. 4.7/5

The site is well maintained and people on hand are helpful and available. Comfy beds and everything we needed for a family & dog. We travelled to walk, there are a couple of small towns nearby for essentials. Some lovely wildlife. Our children are young 12,11 & 9 so they enjoyed the lake / playground nearby. Because of the sheep you can't let the dog off lead (understandable) There is only 1 dog friendly tent so not a big issue. The showers and toilets were cleaned often and we saw frogs on the way to the bathroom at nights as there is a small stream.

Jamie Chidgey | 31 August 2023

Fantastic mini break! 5/5

Fantastic break with the children and dog. As always Claire and the gentlemen go above and beyond. Everything you need is there even down to towels, bedding, small milk and teabags for when you arrive. It's a beautiful break away. The family are full of recommendations for nearby hot spots. Make sure you pick up a box of their eggs because wow! We've stayed 3 times in heron now and can never fault it. If your someone who hates sharing toilet don't worry as they are spotless.

Amazing for family's first visit to Wales 5/5

Heron was amazing to stay in. The owners were lovely and check we were okay on our arrival. So much room and was very comfortable, we all slept brilliantly. So beautiful. Will definitely be coming back.

Jo Deverick | 17 April 2023

a lovely place to stay 4.2/5

I had a lovely stay. The tent was very clean and well presented. Lovely little extra touches, providing milk, marshmellows and some chocolate. The sunset views from the hot tub are beautiful and a very peacful location. Gave a 3 for customer service as there isnt a n/a option. The only interaction I had with owners/staff was a text to comfirm arrival and leaving date. Not a negative, I didnt need anything but had a contact number incase I did. As it is a dog friendly tent it would have been good if it had a small fence around it so I could have let my dog wonder a little, but as there are lambs wondering about I didnt feel comfortable letting him out without being on a lead incase he approached them, scaring them and probably himself. The tent could probably do with a new bin, as lid would not stay closed I had to put a cup on the lid. And I think part of the sofa has gone as it sinks a lot lower than the other cushions.
